How do we structure a Mathematics program at Educate Tutoring?
Learning Mathematics is like building a house. If the foundations aren’t solid then the rest of the house simply won’t stand. Students with gaps in their learning are likely to experience difficulty when they’re faced with increasingly complex mathematical concepts.
At Educate Tutoring we take a systematic approach. We inform our teaching by conducting assessments and by communicating with the student, parent and school teachers (where appropriate). We work to ensure foundation mathematical concepts are consolidated before progressing to learning that requires abstract or higher-order thinking.
To further understand this idea of mastery learning, we recommend this TED talk by Khan Academy founder Sal Khan.
What is numeracy, and is it the same as Mathematics?
‘Mathematics’ and ‘Numeracy’ are terms often used interchangeably, but in fact they are quite different.
Mathematics is a broad field of study, a learning area, a ‘subject’. The Australian Curriculum organises the content of Mathematics into three strands: number and algebra, measurement and geometry and statistics and probability.
Numeracy is a capability, a skill set. It involves knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions. Numeracy is the ability to obtain, process, interpret and convey mathematical understanding in a variety of ways, appropriate to a task.
